Nelson Pioneer Farm And Museum

2211 Nelson Lane

Founded in 1844, the Nelson homestead is one of the premier historic attractions in Mahaska County. The property, maintained by the Mahaska County Historical Society, Inc., a non-profit, educational institution, now features historic buildings from all over Mahaska County, providing visitors a glimpse of what life was like for Iowans in 19th century America.

The Nelson home, built in 1853, and the Nelson barn, built in 1856, are the focal point of the museum and are designated National Historic Sites by the U.S. Department of Interior.

This made a nice day trip for my nieces and nephews. Our first stop was the museum with a wide array of historical items and restrooms available. We walked through all the buildings in the "village". The general store, blacksmith and cottage were favorites among our group. There are picnic tables available for lunches. Staff was courteous and helpful! We will return during the next event for taffy pulling and old fashioned food!

Nelson Pioneer Farm is a great place to spend a day learning about the daily life of past generations. The museum and refurbished township buildings offer a glimpse into the past. The grounds are also available for events and staff is great! Highly recommended!

The grounds are well maintained and it looks like an interesting attraction. We are using the hall for a wedding reception this weekend. It is a very nice facility with an awesome kitchen set up. I would highly recommend it.

Plan to spend at least a few hours there. They have historic buildings (cabin, houses, barns, shops, school, general store, etc.) And all kinds of farming equipment. Make sure to meet their volunteers- they are amazing!

Visited as part of a motorcycle rally, the staff was great at helping out and curious as to why I was stopping.
